Week 1: During free time

Saturday 29/09/2012

I opened up the PowerPoint from lecture 1, so as to look over the information again.  Some information looks a lot to take in.  But thanks to references (such as the reference of Jurassic Park's scene of water rippling on the dinosaur's approach showing an example of transverse waves) and practical examples, (such as when I play the keyboard I can change the reverb levels on the notes played) certain concepts are easier to take in.

I shall look more thoroughly at the things I think I do not understand more than others so as to improve my understanding of the concepts in regards to sound/audio.

Week 1: 28/09/2012

Week 1:  28/09/2012

  • Attended audio lecture
  • Learned about sound and its behaviour
  • Opened the PowerPoint file for week 1's lecture and viewed it more thoroughly
  • Took the points from the above mentioned PowerPoint and put into my own set of summary notes
  • Looked at BBC Bitesize website mentioned on Moodle:
    • Information already known from Higher Physics gained in school
  • Looked at the Waves PDF document
    • Again, most knowledge was known already due to Higher Physics gained in school, but also some from Mathematics with the degrees to radians conversion
    • Most of the knowledge refreshed my memory however, as I am still rusty with the information:  I passed my Higher in Physics in 2009
  • Have not yet visited the Acoustic Anechoic Chamber:
    • Think the visit is next week.  Not sure.  Maybe after that.  Have been told we shall visit it at some point.
  • There were also new things I learned today by looking through the PowerPoint and listening to the lecture.  These things were:
    • Echo's and reverberation
      • This was also due to me playing keyboard that I know something about these qualities already
    • Spectrogram
    • A more in-depth knowledge of The Inverse-Square Law
    • The level of various sounds
  • I shall continue to look at the PowerPoint more thoroughly throughout the week before week 2 commences for this module
